Description

Gotlands Balzac Duffle Bag In 1850, Honoré de Balzac made final preparations for his second and last journey to Russia. He travelled to Odessa to marry Countess Eveline Hańska, the former wife of a Ukrainian landowner, and to bring her back to Paris. He had maintained a lively and intimate correspondence with her since 1832. His relationship with the aristocrat was an “amour lointain” and arguably the ultimate achievement of his life’s work. The surviving selection of letters, which Balzac sent to his beloved in distant Russia, form the basis of the publication of “Lettres à Madame Hańska”, first released in 1990 by Robert Laffont and Roger Pierrot. These “Letters to the Foreigner” are a significant addition to the literary career of the then unrecognised genius, author of “The Human Comedy”. Inspired by Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and desirous of an opportunity to write more letters to his great love, Balzac travelled through Italy in 1836. Accompanying him was a young lady called Caroline Marbouty. Her hair cropped short and dressed as a page, she was the parvenu’s muse, lover and valet in one. During this period, in which multiple letters were written to Eveline Hańska, the brilliant novelist made the observation: “I must create my own passions.” Passions about which the entire city of Paris was talking, passions which included his clothing, his expensive walking stick and his luggage. Elements of the classic design are reproduced in the Balzac Duffle Bag. Elaborately reconstructed and lovingly recreated with contemporary details, including the cardinal blue lining, this is a “must have” for all travellers, not only for fans of Honoré de Balzac.
